October 1-2, 2018

Location: Oktoberfest München, Germany

This was one event that Lucas and I (Lucas in particular) had on our bucket list for a while now. When we realized we both would arrive in Germany for the beginning of October and that Lucas would have two days off from Volleyball, we knew we had to jump on the opportunity to head to Munich for an #Oktoberfest experience!

I'm not sure what we expected it to be, but because we've enjoyed the Calgary Stampede numerous times, we at least knew what a huge festival could be like. But this was amazing! Probably first because it was in Germany and we got to be part of all the excitement - but also because it was actually crazy with all the people! We went on a Monday, which you'd possibly think it'd be a little less busy than on a weekend, but the atmosphere was still unbelievable.

The grounds itself was awesome to wander, with all the delicious food and treats, some games and tons of carnival rides (Lucas's favourite). So many people were dressed up in their fun, traditional Lederhosen and Dirndl outfits, and way too many hilarious hats (why were so many booths selling hats with dancing, cooked turkeys?).

Then we decided to enjoy a few beer tents, which were INSANE. Now, we've been to the Hofbräuhaus a couple times and have always loved the picnic-style craziness, so we assumed it'd be a similar feel. It was somewhat similar but to the max! Literally every table (sitting and standing) and chair were taken. Every tent was packed to its limit and we wondered if we would even get a chance to sit. You usually have to reserve a table and in order to buy a beer, you have to be sitting, so it took us a good hour of wandering multiple tents to snag a spot to even order one! But it was worth it. The atmosphere was awesome with live bands and classic German "cheers-ing" songs. As we had no idea what they were saying, we just threw our beer glasses up in the air and yelled "Prost!", which was just as fun to us!

This is one festival that you should definitely try if you enjoy good beer, tasty German food, and you simply love having fun!

Of course we had bratwurst and sauerkraut

Cheers to a great start to our German living!!
